When two different products are derived from seemingly the same plant, it is only natural to get confused whether they are the same product or not. However, hemp seed oil and CBD oil are not one and the same, in spite of the fact that both products are derived from cannabis. Not that there aren’t any similarities between the two, but despite those similarities, these are two separate products. To understand the differences between the two, read on and find out what the oils are exactly, where they come from, and what the key differences between them are.

Hemp Seed Oil: Definition

Just as the name suggests, hemp seed oil is obtained by pressing it out of the hemp seeds, which come from the hemp plant itself. Now, the hemp from which hemp seed oil is extracted happens to be a specially grown industrial variant of the cannabis Sativa, which have a deliberately low CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) content in them.

CBD Oil: Definition

CBD stands for the cannabinoids known as cannabidiol and just like hemp seed oil, they too are obtained from hemp seeds, but the variant used here is different. Unlike the cannabis Sativa variant used for hemp seed oil extraction, the herb used to get CBD oil from actually has a very high concentration of CBD in it. CBD oil may have a small amount of THC too, but they are generally not present in sufficient quantities to cause a psychoactive effect as marijuana/weed can. However, it is important to know where to buy CBD oil from because authentic sources are a must while buying cannabis products online.

Difference in Origin

The major difference between the origin of the hemp seed oil and CBD oil is that CBD oil can also be extracted from all variants of the Cannabis plant, while hemp seed oil is only obtained from industrial hemp, designed specifically for hemp oil extraction. Purification and filtration processes are necessary for both oils before they can be released for sale. Depending on the cannabis laws of the state where the particular brand of CBD oil is manufactured and sold, they may have a high enough THC:CBD ratio in them to leave users with a slight high, but hemp seed oil by definition has almost no THC in it.

The Difference in Use

While both oils are very useful in their own right and they do share a few benefits, there is a vast difference in what the two oils are used for. To know which one you are looking for, take a look at the use each oil serves and the benefits they bring.

Hemp Seed Oil Benefits and Uses

  • Use as a vitamin B and E supplement
  • Use as an omega-3 and omega-6 supplement
  • A source for dietary potassium, magnesium, protein and antioxidants
  • A popular moisturizing ingredient in topical products such as soaps, shampoos, and lotions
  • Useful against effects of psoriasis, due to the gamma linoleic acid content

CBD Oil Benefits and Uses

  • Favorably affects the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) to produce multiple health benefits
  • Reduces inflammation throughout the body
  • Acts as a natural pain reliever for arthritis patients
  • Relieves symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Has application as an anti-seizure drug
  • CBD oil is a natural neuroprotective and neuro-strengthening agent
  • It could help delay or even prevent neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s
  • Has use in treating side-effects of cancer treatment

From the point of view of the consumer, understanding these differences between the two is very important, so that people don’t end up buying the wrong product, which would be a waste of money. Reputed sellers do make it clear what they are selling, so now you know which one it is that you are looking for.
