The pervasive view of the newest generation of young people from the perspective of older generations is this: ‘they have too much freedom, they are lazy, spoiled, and have everything handed to them.’ The latter part is somewhat true. With all of the new technology in the past quarter century, we have the world at our fingertips, literally. All you have to do to buy something is click a button on your phone or other electronic device, you do not even have to go grocery shopping anymore, and you can even do your schooling and work from home. So, why are all of us so unhappy all the time? Complaining about everything and wanting more and more as soon as possible.
Are We Spoiled?
Our expectations nowadays are way too high compared to older generations because we have too much simplicity by searching whatever you want to know in an instant online and being able to get a ride in no time at all from your phone. For some reason, everyone thinks they are more important than anyone else and that they should be treated better than the next person. Sometimes this can be a good thing. We should feel special. But, feeling more entitled than others can make you a bit difficult to please. How are you supposed to have a good relationship with anyone if you feel like you should be treated better or get more than your partner? A couple is supposed to be equal or else you are going to have problems for sure. You cannot expect your significant other to treat you like a prince or princess while you treat them like your servant. That is not a healthy relationship and will not last long.
If you are in a relationship with someone that you want to continue to be with, it is time to start thinking about them. Do not always expect your partner to cater to you while you do whatever you want to do. And if the shoe is on the other foot, if you are the one doing all the catering to someone who barely acknowledges you, then you may need to take a closer look at your relationship. Are you serious about this person? Do you think they are serious about you? Do they bring you down or make you feel better about yourself? If you are the one who is doing all the giving while your significant other is doing all of the taking, you may be in a toxic relationship. Is it worth saving? That depends on how long you have been together, how serious you are, your history, and how you feel about them. If you and your partner still want to make a go of it, you may want to look into some couples therapy.
Although there are always going to be ups and downs in every relationship, if you and your partner are fighting more than you are talking or if you just do not seem to talk at all, it may be time to talk to a professional. And, just like everything else nowadays, you can do it online with a computer, phone, or other electronic device. You do not even have to leave your home or make an appointment. So, go for it. Get your relationship back on track and be happy.
